The sealing components of the motorcycle crankcase need to be checked regularly, as the condition of the sealing components directly affects the lubrication effect, sealing performance, and service life of the engine. The following is a detailed introduction of the points:
1、 Why do we need to regularly check the crankcase seals?
▸Prevent oil leakage
Aging, wear, or damage of crankcase seals (such as oil seals and gaskets) can cause oil leakage and insufficient lubrication.
▸Prevent external impurities from entering
After the seal is damaged, dust, moisture, and other substances may enter the crankcase through the joint, contaminating the engine oil and exacerbating internal component wear.
▸Maintain pressure balance inside the crankcase
The crankcase will generate a certain amount of air pressure during operation, and the failure of seals will disrupt the pressure balance, which may cause oil to spray out from the ventilation port or the crankshaft oil seal to bulge out.
▸Prevent fuel or coolant from mixing in
Poor sealing may also cause fuel and coolant to enter the oil system, resulting in oil emulsification or lubrication failure.
2、 Common types of seals for crankcases
▸Front and rear oil seals of crankshaft
Installed at the front end (ignition side) and rear end (clutch side) of the crankshaft, sealing is the most critical.
▸Upper and lower box sealing gaskets
Used at the junction of the upper and lower crankcases to prevent oil leakage in the gaps.
▸Bolt hole sealing gasket or sealant
For complex box structures, some parts are reinforced with sealant or rubber rings for sealing.
▸Breathing valve (PCV) sealing structure
Ensure the normal operation of the ventilation system while avoiding oil and gas leaks.
3、 How often should seals be checked?
▸Suggested inspection cycle:
Check it every 3000-5000 kilometers or every time the oil is changed.
▸Any abnormalities should be checked immediately:
If oil stains, abnormal oil consumption, engine shaking, heavy oil odor, etc. are found on the ground, the sealing status should be checked immediately.
4、 What should be noted when inspecting seals?
▸Observe for any signs of oil leakage
Especially at both ends of the crankshaft, the joint seam of the housing, and around the oil drain screw.
▸Check if the rubber has aged or hardened
If the sealing components harden, crack, or deform, they should be replaced in a timely manner.
▸Check the tightness of the sealing gasket
Whether the fastening bolts are loose and whether the sealing gasket is evenly pressed.
▸After cleaning the oil stains, observe again
First wipe off the surface oil stains, then run for a period of time to observe if there is any further leakage and determine if the seal has failed.
